SHOW JUMPING

Introducing up-and-coming stars, Jemma and Erin Chislett

The road to a passion for Life, Horses and the transition from child to womanhood

Jemma and Erin are identical twins and with that comes an identical passion for horses and the path they have chosen for their riding careers.

Coming from a family with a fanatical mother, grandmother and great grandmother that lived and breathed horses, they were bound to fall into the trap. As children they started off at a small local yard, riding weekly have lessons, bobbing on school ponies and loving the outings. Oblivious to what this sport really entailed.

On their 7th birthday their mom, who has always produced project ponies and saved or rehabilitated OTTB’s, twisted their father’s arm to agree to the purchase of a their first pony to share.

This was the beginning of the addiction.

Many lessons where learnt, many tears, falls but most of all joy at the fact of owning a pony. Hours were spent grooming, practicing show turnout and cleaning tack. All this whilst girls learnt on the lunge with their pony to start. Quickly and very swiftly the pony collection became 3 ponies and a thoroughbred. Girls entered the realm of Sanesa participating in showing, and jumping. This was all at the age of 8yrs old.

A move abroad meant their project ponies where sold on and one even kept for a year to ensure a return into riding in SA. During their time in the Middle East they rode and competed in the dressage discipline.

All this just made them eager to get back home to compete in the bigger leagues.

4 years passed in the Middle East and their return to South Africa in February 2021 was met with the delivery of their hand picked OTTB’s purchased whilst still in the Middle East.

Fast forward 2 years and the girls have produced 4, young amazing Thoroughbreds and Jemma transitioning onto a warm blood.

The girls have competed in Performance Riding and showing for SANESA where they attained Full Colors for their school. They also produced their horses to the 90cm grades in Sanesa. With this came a hard road of understanding the merit of young 4-year-old horses.  Many lessons where learnt.

Jemma sustained a close call during a working hunter class where she had a rotational fall with her horse Glory. This event sparked a caution in her, which she still carries with her to this day. Moving on to a new coach at a competitive yard the girls quickly produced their horses to the current 1.10m height, competing at most of the large graded shows local and provincial.

They remain passionate about producing young horses for their future careers. This passion will never cease but only get stronger with each achievement they reach.

Above all this story is about 2 little girls, a pony and the passion that is possible with the support of many people.

Many thanks to Sigrid from Equestrian Fashion for seeing this trait in the twins and supporting them on their road to greatness.

The development of this sport remains in the hands of good sponsors, like Sigrid!
